I've looked at a lot of threads and still can't seem to figure out what the problem is.
I am trying a very simple test mesh for grass. It's two sheets crossed in the center. In Maya 2012 I have rotated the vertex normals so they are all pointing up and slightly out.
I have explicit normals checked on the import.

I have the material set up with a color/mask RGBA texture. Nothing but diffuse for this test.
I have use with terrain/use with landscape checked.
I have tried both on and off for the use with static lighting flag

For the mesh I have used for instancing checked and the lightmap has been set to both 32 and 0.
I have a dedicated lightmap channel "1."

Yet STILL my foliage meshes come out completely black. What gives?
