Character Controller issues (3dsmax 2012)

As in, max won't let me make one. It did earlier, but I foolishly deleted it after I needed to make changes to my rig and had trouble integrating them properly. Those changes made, I grab everything that's supposed to be used by the character controller and the following happens:
"A character assembly cannot be created since more than one object is parented to objects outside of the current selection."
Then the maxScript window opens up and provides an error of its own saying "MAXscript Rollout Handler Exception
--Type error: items: requires Array, got: undefined"
If I only grab my topmost controller in the hierarchy the character will create but I have a hard time making sure that it is actually in charge of all of my rig/skeleton, since not every controller in it is listed by the Character Members list, and the reference for the character assembly says "select everything" anyhow. I just saw something about wire parameters being created afterward- might that have something to do with it?
