In another tread I am working on a statue that can be pulled. For details on it I want to put scratches. And dents via alpha map, is this a good idea or common practice? In the past it gives me good results doing it.
First of all, you should have either asked this question in your other thread, or posted all the information in this thread...saying "my other thread" and expecting us to find it is a little annoying.
Anyways, I did run over and go take a look. Decals are more used for breaking up tiling and things like that. I wouldn't use decals on a unique prop such as the statue...you would likely want to unwrap the prop uniquely...then just apply all your unique texture details on that map.
The problem I though I would have is there is a normal map from the bake, I would likely make a normal map if I made decals. If I put the decals normals on the normal bake, wouldnt it look messy? I remember having to be carefull with stuff like that.

Its not going to look messy unless you make it look messy.
