Home 3D Art Showcase & Critiques

Hi all! I'm new to Polycount & was hoping to get some constructive feedback!

I'm an aspiring 3D environment artist looking for help! I decided to bite the bullet and present my portfolio for any constructive feedback. I'm ready to start on a new project in the hopes that sooner or later, my work will be good enough to land me a junior/internship/freelance position, and your feedback will help. Thank you!

P.S. Information on any leads would be awesome too! I'm currently in Seattle, but I'm willing to relocate. poly120.gif

First of all, I love the fact you have a simple website. I click the link and all I have to do is scroll down to see your work. Good job on that [thumbsup]

As for your environment stuff, it's looking pretty plain. That could just be the fog or the lighting. I'd say your next step is to try and model some more complex objects; that will separate you from the competition. Find an interesting concept you like and go from there, or maybe make your own. I think what you really need is a WOW piece. Something the average person will look at and react by soiling themselves. Something epic, complex, modular and impressive.

    Keep it up!

Edit: Have a look through some of the art on Feng Zhus site. http://fengzhudesign.com/
Maybe it will inspire you :)

Thanks Selaznog! I really appreciate the honest feedback. Someone did mention that the lighting could use a little work, so I'm looking into that, and I'll see if I can get the fog to look a bit better (I was going for the dusty air look).

That is one thing I did realize after I finished my last project, that there is no really complex objects even though I know I'm very capable of making some. I'm definitely going for the WOW factor this time. My plan was to work off of a concept this time to show I can do that, so that website is perfect!

Do you think I should make complex objects for my current scene or move on and just show that I'm constantly improving through new projects?

    Thanks!

Start a new project! Well, that's what I would do. It'll be an exciting new adventure :P.

Remember, don't be afraid to challenge yourself. If an employer looked at your website, that first image there is what they would see. And all that's in it are cylinders and rectangles.

To warm yourself up on something big, you could start off with a lot of small complex props.

I don't see any zBrush in your environments, so if you did something along the lines of this:

Then you could do some fancy ornate stuff in zbrush.

Here's something else that might be fun (and you could add it to your current scene)

Yeah, that sounds like a great idea. I might warm up with that generator (unless I find something else, but it looks like it would fit just fine!). Thanks again!

Well this is what I got so far. This should be done, I know, but other things got in the way of me spending a lot of time on it. That being a new test associate position at Microsoft, and an internship to create environment art somewhere else. Priorities have shifted :). I will get it done sooner or later, or it will bug me.power_generator_WIP.jpg?attachauth=ANoY7cr2eWdlfDRs4h07Qz0MhOeMLWIlB946mSYqbtfJYivdAo6zfBLL-1frsZOEW1kOsYsdL7hNYJM5wig4HkaOCsSDscWgvSHhd8wgCUMrH6kE-KmUmVVKpl_fc4MWEeclvQpN8P-MHZGJH7WHuqYBa93K8GqpYVka5SAQfK35snJ4P1VKzZfrDCOiPpAbyVj6Zmx1ha8-6GjoAiiRVPUbC4nsf7aT3rpkRbjhvIMdUChy4AA1GGk%3D&attredirects=0

I think you should remove the classroom environment. Not only is the quality lower, but it's also simpler and less interesting than the Victorian stuff and the sub-base. Plus: that's casino carpet, not classroom carpet; and Alienware in a classroom, doubt it.

edit: woops, didn't see your last post. My bad.

Haha, yeah that's the classroom carpet, and we had Alienware computers :). Very good point though! It's time to remove the classroom! Thanks!
