texture paths in material editor help?

Is there a way i could set up my materials so that i can pack up my project folder, take it anywhere on any other computer, and open it and the textures would be located properly, even if the root directory is different or the drive initial is different?

If you're using Max it should be fine as long as the relative path hasn't changed, so just store your textures in a textures folder in your project folder and make sure that doesn't move when you're moving to another computer.

If it's something you're going to be doing frequently, I would definitely say get an external HDD to store everything on and just keep programs on your computer.

I think you also need to set some custom settings for relative paths, if they are going to be outside the project folder.

You can use the asset tracking dialog to retarget a common root folder and other such stuff.. that will actually change the references rather than using the default guesswork so can solve problems with export/rendering etc.
