Hey guys and gals,
A few years ago, I went to Durham College for Game Development. It is a 3 year advanced diploma program in Oshawa Ontario. I graduated and when I got a job, I was asked to join the advisory board for the program. Last meeting, I had brought up the idea of getting industry pros to critique the students work. There was lots of debate about it, and whether or not people would be willing. If the college would even pay for it. Everything about it, really.
Personally, I think it is a great way to give students a real pro advice / suggestions, and give them some sort of touch with the industry.
So, I would like to ask the community your opinions of it, and get as much information as possible before the next meeting.
My question is for you professionals out there. Would you ever consider doing crits for students once a month via email / video chat? Chances are, it would be voluntary, so no compensation. But, that's why I'm asking. See if it would be doable or not. So, you say your specialty, then the students would pick 1 piece they want critted, and the teachers would send them to the right person. Class limit is 28, but chances are, there would be more than 1 pro doing it, so you may only get a couple things to crit. Your crits would need to be industry standard, nice and harsh, tell them exactly what is wrong and what they should fix. Paint overs, and all that. This would be limited to people who are already in the industry. Not just hobbyists or fellow students.
What say you, fellow polycounters?
Also, if you know right now you would be interested, please send me a PM! It's not something thats going ahead just yet. But it would be nice to have a list of names for the program coordinator.
In case you`re curious, this is this years student reel.

for participating professionals it obviously has the advantage that you can scout already and get a clear image of how someone operates with feedback.
on the other hand - why don't students post more of their work on polycount and other sites by them selves? i remember the hand painted wells thread from a few months ago, and that was kick ass work with great feedback loops.
