Newbie modeling question.

So I have seen from my research of trying to model a helmet that it has modules that animate to either open a visor, close the visor, or to serve another function. My question is that are these separate objects grouped with the helmet mesh or are they part of the mesh. I am confused because when I see the demo of these models, the wireframe indicates it's either and extension of the mesh base or grouped. I'm not sure as to what approach of animation technique may be involved.

theyre most likely going to be a separate mesh that is attached and moves with the helmet via the rig

I see, and as for armor/clothing/misc and hair does the same apply to character model? Or is it that they are seperate meshes constructing the subject matter?

could be either. but as long as the bones are weighted to the meshes correctly, it wont matter.
