3ds Max and game engine general questions

Hey guys! First time poster here. I'd like to start by saying how great this forum is. It's really inspiring to see all the art, and very educating to read these topics. All the talent here is pretty intimidating!

I have been tinkering with Max and UDK for awhile now, but haven't seriously tried to learn them until about 2 months ago. I have a few general questions concerning some of the terms I see used, and some tips for a newbie.

1. I have been experimenting with workflows lately, and am wondering some efficient ways of modeling and texturing. What's usually the best order to do things in?

2. What exactly is "Texture Baking?" To my understanding, it seems to just be the collapsing of texture and light maps.

3. Any habits I should get into? Or stay out of? Also, any references to ANYWHERE I could learn more would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance Polycount! I'm really excited to try my hand at all of this, I absolutely adore the art posted here!

For UDK, the best place to start is at UDN: http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/WebHome.html

Pretty much everything you could need to know is there somewhere. Texture baking is the process of transferring details from a high poly mesh to a low poly mesh using normal maps, ambient occlusion maps, etc. There's a zillion ways to do this, try out all the different methods and see which gives you the best result/pain in the ass ratio. It's something you'll want to get to know well if you're serious about making art for games.
