Hey Everyone,
Just started our next assignment at Uni and thought id start a thread to document the experience and hopefully gain some good feedback from all the artists here on Polycount.
This Character will be based around the Disney Character Pinocchio
First thoughts on this design was the typical style for Pinocchio, but as I discussed with students, friends and teachers I decided to take a more twisted design.
This Character will be modelled for use in a game engine (Gamebryo in this case) however it will also be used in a short film.
Now if you've managed to get through all that I just thought id upload some ref images so you guys know what direction im gonna start with, then ill begin uploading silhouete sketches too.

So here is my first Silouhette
As you can see there are two designs that have been chosen to be further researched and more silouhettes of these concepts to be drawn up
One for each design
Please tell me what you think
Just some more reference for the next Silouhette.
Pinocchio will have more of a twisted personality and design, from these images you should get the idea of the direction I will be going
Broken down to analize each different part of the puppet.
So I ticked which ones have been most liked by other students and teachers.
From this point I will concept a few ideas, and make up colour pallet etc
Please crit if any advice
Also with the feet i think it needs to be more like the hand, its interesting how the entire puppet is segmented as you would assume but the hand isnt, the hand is very human esque. Maybe have the foot the same? not sure but i like the idea of the creepy hand that ISNT segmented.
Good job so far
I will concept some designs of the head shape, keeping in mind of the tree like shape
With the whole body, will work on making it look more like it has been carved like in the first reference with gepetto
With the hand a feet I want it to be that more creepy look, but also make it look like carved wood (cant see that very well in the Silouhette)
Will post more soon
Also included design for the feet, which follows the same design as the hands. (creepy and not segmented)
As you can see the chosen design has been highlighted
If any comments please crit
From here drawing up and perspective shot of the character, also adding colour.
Will be the foot concept idea (same as the hands) will be in perspective concept
Just a perspective drawing of my upcoming character
Finished the outline and slowly working on colour
Slowly adding colour to perspective drawing while modelling
So here is my Low Poly Model
Tris=3000
Basically this Model will be used for animating while a higher model is built and sculpted
Then taking this Rig and animations and applying them to the higher poly version
I have created a basic rig and controls also, just to make it easier to animate
So here is just some working progress.
Just been unwrapping before I take it into Zbrush to sculpt a wood texture to this model
Unwrapping going well
Will post soon when begin to sculpt
Walk, Run, Idle etc
Now to begin sculpting and texturing
Has been a slow process but going to spend more time texturing to really make sure it look good in the end
Adding some detail with the sculpt, but not going over the top for this project
Will be posting sculpt/texturing progress soon
(Also some examples of textures for reference to work off)

Run Animation

Just put a lot of work into It and this will be awesome!
Just been working on the sculpt today, just basically adding rough detail
and slowly building up more and more this week
Will post sculpt progress tonight
So here is my sculpt progress, just blocking out where things will go and roughing up the overall feel to make it seem like damaged wood
Also adding in where the cuts/scratches etc go
Here is where i have done the same thing for the body, more detailed because have spent more time on it
Just slowly adding more detail
Any critique welcome, or any suggestions
good job mate
Yeah the trimdynamic brush is amazing especially for the shape and style im going for
and ill give noisemaker a go
So I have re-done the sculpt, really taking a step back and just slowly working this time
I used the crumple brush with zbrush to aquire this effect that I like for the base (Carved Wood, that has been damaged)
From here will continue to add more detail just adding layers until the desired effect is attained
I also have a close up of the head to show off the 1st stage of sculpting to show what effect I have attained, and will build from (very rough)
Will continue to post progress as it happens, slowly
Hey Everyone,
So this is my final sculpt in Zbrush, finally got the right feel that I was looking for, with enough detail to show its wood but not to much its over the top
Have also exported Normal Maps to apply to lower poly mesh as shown below :
Here is the appiled Normal Map, looking really nice with the total tris under the set amount of 12500
And keeping really nice detail from the sculpt
I have also begun to texture and here is waht i have been working on
Hand Painted Wood texture, still needs alot of work but slowly building on it
Crits welcome, any advice would be amazing
So here is just a quick reference of what Im working on at the moment, just texturing the eyes and getting that worn away effect of the wood texture
Still lots of work to be done but just a quick update of whats to come
Thanks for the advice
Hey Guys,
Im trying to texture this guy and i really suck, any advice on how to do this?
Just really struggling to do this texture
