Hi! Low poly knight progress wont say much else here because you wanna get to that good-good dont ya?
All hand painted in photoshop, this will be a relatively realistic model when its finished and I will be including a sword and shield. There are so many armet helmets around I took some key things (mainly iconic) and tried to blend them the best I can
Heres an update on the body and some paint blockins. I will be making spaulders so the deformity in the chest tex is not really important to me right now, but will be fixing it on my next model because this is my usual low poly base mesh.
its going to need something to sell the model imo, maybe a nice crest on the shield or your spaulders could have some sort of metal decoration.
your chain mail is circles right? it might be a good thing to make a tile in 3d of some chain mail bake out the AO tile onto a plane then paint over that, then use that to do your chainmail.
@Paintforge, you are right. But I want to sell the model without too much fantasy crap because im going to be using this model for a project of mine. The chain mail texture I made thats realistic will NOT display right from the view the camera has that this model will be used in, so I simplified it so it doesnt turn into noisy mush
@Harry, too cliche my friend Not all of them had those plumes, and this knight isn't special or anything other than his knightlyhood.
@Blaisoid thanks! I can't stand over done busy fantasy. In WoW the only way I remember if someone killed me already or not is if their armor is glowing or something, you can never remember the designs and all that work goes to nothing.
But I'm not liking the chain mail either. I think you have two choices to make it look right.
1- make chain rings on a dark background (probably leather) (yeah little rings might not render well very small)
2- make the circles 'metal studs' on a dark leather background. (probably look best a low res)
Right now it really looks like a futuristic material you might see in MW3.
Alright, ended up redoing the entire torso and I also took another route with the chainmail so it still feels "platey" without looking like a badazzled jacket sleeve :P
Im contemplating on where or not to redo the straps because from the view its going to be presented at they really wont make a difference.
Of course! But going from chainmail-plate looks way too dull so added a tiny bit of elegance to the model. Its just another layer of cloth under the plate to deal with blunt hits and friction from the mail on the plate, another layer of cloth is worn under the chainmail that is the final barrier from punctures from arrows or spears.
I like this Colors are working well together, and the belt buckle things are nice accents. Agreed with Joseph, would be good to see you working on the whole thing at once. Maybe add a little more rust in places, like you have around the helmet? Keep it up :]
Thanks! I actually had a different hole design but it wouldn't register from the angle its going to be seen from, so I changed it to something that is easier to see.
@mrrik it was all painted with the standard round brush
Bonner, eh I don't think normals go well with hand painted honestly because when you paint the light yourself it looks much more artistic. Normals make it feel too technical , but i do think specular maps work really well though, thanks! And yes the view this model is seen at will be similar to a mobile app, which is why I see no need for me to redo the straps unless it hinders the final result which I can't wait to get to
Alright guys I really need some input here. The shoulders make the thing feel awkward. I don't know if its just im seeing too much metal... which is realistic, or if theyre flat our wrong.
I may counter this high metal concentration by making the chain-mail darker but I dont think itll help the right spots
In fact, they shoulders may be tilted wrong. Ill play with it.
Heres a change to the shoulders to make them more realistic

that kinda deal... but obviously the pith helmet in that pic is irrelevant, just the same loose fluffy kinda plumage.
ps: please, no plume.

@njc6425 Thanks!

With ya on the plume!
Thanks guys!

I'm pretty bummed out that those awesome blue sleeves are no longer visible shoulders feel too bland I'm going to address that tonight
Also, should I tint the armor copperIsh like I did or keep it blue?
