Goodison Park Stadium [Uni FYP]

Hey guys,

I'm currently working on my Final Year Project at Staffs Uni and im researching into both Modularity and Environment Creation for Sports Games with the idea to blend the two together.

The primary aim of the project is to increase my knowledge of the modular process and how it can be applied to large, complex environments like football stadiums. For the practical side of it i'm aiming to recreate Goodison Park, home of Everton F.C. using the modular technique.

The stadium:

I plan to accurately recreate the entire interior of the stadium as well as any necessary exterior visuals before importing into UDK for testing.
This will hopefully allow me to gain an understanding of whether or not this method would be the most suitable for creating this type of environment.

The point of the thread is to gain feedback on the quality and accuracy of my modelling as part of my testing, and I hope I can get a lot of feedback and critique.

First thing I did was take a trip to the stadium where I was escorted round to take a bunch of reference images, about 475 in total, of pretty much everything.

For my analysis I have been using those images to break each stand down into a list of modular pieces:

As well as breaking each section of seats down into number of rows etc:

EDIT: Apologies for the rather poor quality images, ill try and re-upload some better resolution ones.

I've done this for every section of each stand and it's really helped me get a good understanding of how everything fits together.

Im currently compiling a list of all the modular and unique assets that will need to be created, from these images and i'm also working on a basic blockout of each stand to give me a better idea of the placement of things.

I'm hoping to start Modelling either tonight or tomorrow with a view to having most of the assets completed fairly quickly as im working to a tight deadline.

Will update a soon as I have any progress!

Not much major progress to report as of yet, begun blocking out the stands before I create the higher detailed pieces which I can just swap for the blocked out placeholders.

    First completely blocked out stand:

Main issue at the minute is the overall scale but I want to get everything roughly blocked out before I start refining.

Current aims are to get two more stands blocked out this weekend, will update once ive got more progress.

Apologies for the lack of updates on this, been a stressful few weeks.

Anyway, the progress hasnt quite gone to plan and is considerably behind, but never the less here is the progress so far:

    Bullens Road:

    and its real-life counterpart:

Also pretty much finished getting all the shapes and forms in on the Gwladys Street end:

The next step is to finish off Bullens Road, and begin on the main stand. Hopefully around Monday I will be able to start making the few higher detailed assets required and start to use them abit more modularly ( i.e. the roof split up into sections rather than one large asset). Then its unwrapping and alot of the detail will be in the textures.

Hopefully my next update will be abit quicker in coming and will have a good amount of progress!

Any feedback or tips you guys might have is really appreciated as it helps towards my testing but also helps me improve personally as I feel my environmental skills are severely lacking..

    Thanks guys :)

It looks like its coming a long nicely, the modular pieces can be easily indentified. keep at it and get this completed.

    Nice Progress!
Its clear to see how the initial modelling is visibly similar to the reference images, the proportions seem alittle off, but not enough to stop it looking right

This is looking great, nice planning, its a shame you didnt post the triangle count that would have helped understand how well the modularity worked!

    Hope the rest goes smoothly

@pr0sorrow: Thanks! Unfortunately given the time left and the progress made its very unlikely this will get finished in time however there is progress and one of the stands has been textured, im gonna keep working on this once uni is finished too. Want to really do it justice.

@ljwillow: Thanks :) Im currently in the progress of changing the proportions but like I said, doesnt look like ill have time to drastically alter it :(

@Weazel: Thanks alot man :) Good point, ill take a look at that and try and provide some information on it.

    Recent progress:

Each stand has been created and is in the process of being connected together however given the lack of time left, focus has been shifted onto getting one stand textured and in engine before the deadline (on the advice of my lecturer) and heres how its currently looking:

Ill try my hardest to get some more progress to you guys before the deadline.. tomorrow <.<
