Hand of Death [WIP]

Hey guys!!!
Just finished up an assignment at uni (College) and have a few weeks before the next one so i thought id try do some personal stuff now seeming as i find it hard to do so when doing an assignment. So basically for this mini project i am going to be creating the hand of death or hand of hades whichever you prefer . Im working on a concept at the moment, here are a few quick sketches ive also done some hand studies although im having difficulty uploading them

Basically the bottom image it most likely going to be the pose of the hand for the final comp, i am however undecided on whether or not the hand should be holding the all seeing eye (Carried by the 3 witch sisters in greek mytho...i forget their name) or the earth....if i were to do the eye it would be kind of gruesome but the iris would be very attracting (Look like a galaxy or something cosmic 8) ). If i were to do the earth it would probably be dying so desaturated colours and maybe even some lava cracks let me know on any opinions or thoughts, will upload more stuff tomorrow morning Night polycounters

so ive just roughed up a quick concept sketch of the top of the hand.... unsure of the skin colour at the moment, im thinking decaying but not too sure... any crits would be great

You may intentionally be going for a darker skin tone, but i would like to see some of the highlights so I can tell what kind of detail you want it to have. It just look flat for now.

yeh i was going to do that but then i realised the pose of the hand was too flat and uninteresting anyway so im going to be doing a more detailed concept for the final piece which ill be working on shortly, i seem to have problems adding detail in photoshop but ill try my best

you should certainly be looking at more refrence for this exercise. It looks as though your studies aren't studies at all, and more so a repetition of bad habits.

Did a quick skeletal overlay, i reckon ill actually draw a skeletal hand and layer the skin ontop of that for the final concept to achieve that proper skeletal hand look

focused more on the skeletal structure of the hand here, trying to find out where the muscle definition is to understand which part of the hand i can kind of diminish and which part needs to retain some definition of some sort. Very helpful, and the new design although similar to the previous one feels stronger as a result, gonna start the final comp tomorrow.

Very nice! It miggt be good to think of the sharp end points on the fingers as finger nails, as opposed to sharpened bone. Think like how a bear claw is attached.

Yeh i was thinking about going with finger nails but wasnt too sure, that image is really awesome ref konstruct!! thanks!

gone ahead to final concepting now, changed the look after seeing a left for dead image which inspired me, also the pose of the hand is more menacing now as opposed to the one i had up earlier of the hand loosely holding the eye, i havent put the claws (nails) in yet as i did this before reading these posts. Using an image i found as ref, at first i was trying to copy it but i couldnt get the bone placement right, so i kind of overlayed on top in photoshop... not happy with the wrist atm so im gonna fix that, and add in the claws

a quick update pretty happy with how its coming along as im not very good with 2d, practise makes perfect :P. Something about it looks strange but im having trouble figuring out what it is... let me know what you guys think

I think it would be cool if you had the muscles/ligaments hanging from the eyeball

WYeh thats what i was after but i couldnt find any good ref specially as im not sure what those ligaments and stuff are actual called something oculis i think lol

To me, the proportions are a little wonky in the final concept. A human eye, I'm assuming thats what kind of eye you're making, is quite a bit smaller than that. It looks like he's holding a baseball sized sphere, eye balls are a lot smaller than baseballs.

Either the eye is too big, or its a little baby hand. Which I'll admit is quite a bit creepier, but again, I'm not sure thats what you were going for..

well the eye itself is derived from greek mythology, the three sisters...cant remember their actual technical name though haha. if i remember it ill let you know... but you can see them in Clash of the Titans and also in the old Hercules cartoon movie. So i wouldnt say its a human eye but more like and eye like object that has the ability to see everything, its large because in my mind i wanted the hand to be fully grasping the eye, however when i start the sculpting ill play around with the proportions
