Hi Polycount,
I get stuck in grips of "wanting to model something really bad" but I have a really hard time of choosing something. Right now, I'm trying to build an environment portfolio to apply somewhere by mid-April.
Can anyone suggest good objects or something similar? I'm new to this whole thing and while I spend many hours looking at portfolio sites, it only makes me more confused and short-attention-spanned.
Someone help my damnable, easily excited brain.

Create a scene inspired by one of your favorite games
Recreate a cool picture or scene from a movie
Pick a cool piece of architecture
Just find something cool that you think you can stay excited about and get to it!
Edit: Something that exists you have access to...
Model that.
youll be done by monday

If I did a big pile of storage pieces like barrels and crates, the world has probably seen too many of those in every newbie portfolio. Those ones are obvious, but I don't know what else is to professionals.
To some extent, I was kind of hoping someone would tell me what they tried their hand to get the ball rolling when they were new. But since some of you think I'm a prankster or a nutter I'll just end this with "BLARRAHAJJAGBAHAAAAgagagagagagagGAAAA!" to satisfy that crowd.
- old damaged pillar
- stone fountain
- fire hydrant
- hand-painted sword
- sci fi hallway (debatable)
- M4 Assault Rifle (debatable)
- ?
(tongue placed in cheek-pocket here)
2. Fail.
3. Rinse and repeat.
4.???
5.Profit.
When in doubt use brute force.
YES! live by this. I am a massive failure.
If you made a bunch of general everyday props and that was it then yeah it's a bit boring. IF you place these props in a fully fleshed environments with a interesting scenario then that's different.
ditto.
I get that feel all the time
I'm having it right now
Got me a Tablet to use with Zbrush 2 weeks ago yet I'm Dancing to moves Like Jagger for days instead
Friends help! Find some to work with! I lost 99% of mine a year ago
That's one amazing looking toaster.
1)Gather inspiration from other portfolios
2)Model an unrecognizable toaster.
3)Place it in a billiards scene
5)Tell everyone it was inspired by Darksiders
4)Make a demo reel with epic music
Hahaha, ty for the help for those who took me seriously and I guess I got a laugh from those who didn't. To many of you, you have been doing it so long and often that making a piece is simply that and you can't understand where I'm coming from. In my brain this is, "OMG I'M MAKING AN ASSET THIS IS MY CHANCE TO GET IT RIGHT HERE WE GO DON'T FUCK THIS UP"
Really though, maybe modeling the old mainstay of any portfolio, the 'abandoned back alley' or something of that nature might be a good idea. Nothing too complex with regards to terrain, fairly simple assets to model (ye olde dumpster etc.), a little lighting practice.. and depending on how detailed you want to make it, you can scale it up.. abandoned back alley in a medieval persian city; the alley's the scene of a murder in 1930's chicago, etc. etc.
-Hotdog stand--not an entire scene but on a floating pedestal lit in UDK?
-Small section of a poppy, colourful 1950s diner (booth seating, old radio, maybe some food, coke ads)
-Bell ringer's tower (a bell tower where someone has obviously been nesting
Any of this sound typical or too challenging for a newbie?
Okay, I'm doing that. Haha ty. Apparently I just needed to bounce some ideas. I'll start a thread in the pimping and previews section soon and get critiqued as I go.
