Infos on Realtime data streaming e.g. Open World Games

E_E
Hi,

I was always interested in "realtime straming" engines in exploration based games like Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption...

But it seems i cant find any infos on the internet. Everything i find are definitions of the term but no real in-depth information about it.

Does anyone have sources for this topic?

I believe the correct term would be "texture streaming". Its a technique used on large maps and open environments. This in addition to level of detail based on distance for meshes. Check out how LOD's work.

Some games will force the player into smaller choke points in which the area they are leaving is downgraded in detail and or removed from memory and the direction they are going gets loaded fully.

If there are other terms, I dont know them but I believe thats the direction you are wanting to go.
