Is there a way to pass selections up the stack to the vertex paint modifier? I really need to be able to select rings, loops, open edges etc. Seems like the modifier is extremely limited in this respect unless I'm missing something obvious.
Alternatively anyone know of way to do this in maxscript or if any scritps already exist that allow more complete selection methods? Some quick google searches suggest they don't *shrug*

If not you can just set the vertex colors in editable poly, under the vertex properties rollout.
1. Add a Vertex Paint modifier, open the Edit window.
2. Add a new layer (bottom left corner button).
3. Condense (bottom right corner button).
4. Now you can adjust the existing vertex colors, with Adjust Colors, etc.
Hope that makes sense.
can these be baked down as well?
