I'd gladly pay $300 for a printer just to fool around with creating mock-ups and prototypes (and I'm sure some studios would like to a have something like that for artists to use, valve recently purchased a 3d printer for employees), Obviously if I wanted a detailed print with small surface texture detail I would be happy to pay a few hundred for it.
Well, I think if you get the parts from the right places you can end up building a 3d printer for about $350. If you have old normal printers to salvage parts from it can probably get even cheaper. Though you still have to build and trouble shoot it that way.
Reprap.org has all the info about it. If I get enough money and can find my old printers I plan to make the one that's called a Prusa Mendel Air.
Many of these 3D prints are very nice indeed and I have seen a few in my time. Any of you guys want to publish an article about your work on a blog that I edit about 3D printing called 3DPrintWise? We are always keen to get new work to show.
