Take it as a challenge to hit a game character at that res. It might be fun. 40k isn't unheard of in games, might as well have at least one comp with that limit.
Uncharted was ~37k if I recall correctly, and from what I've heard it's a freakishly rare occurrence to have a poly count that high for even the main character. Resident Evil is about 15k, which is fairly reasonable for a AAA game.
Also I think the second prize needs to be changed a bit. Unity Mobile licenses are free right now.
Fighting game characters get pretty high poly though as there's not a lot of extra detail they have to render besides the two players. I guess if he's a "space battle character" maybe it's just going to be him and whatever he happens to be battling noodling about in the void of space.
I know that Dante from DMC4 was 40K, but that's because the game engine created a copy of the mesh during runtime ontop of the original rigged mesh for havok/PP and other stuff.
But that's a game engine thing, so 40K really does sound high for a single character. Unless weapons and full gear and effect through mesh are included...
The other reason I brought this up is because I don't like uploaded a 40K model to a site for rigging...just saying, I don't trust that.
Contestants modeling and entering characters into the contest are eligible for a FREE Auto-Rigging from Mixamo to aid them in the posing of their characters. If you wish to have your entry Auto-Rigged ...
The word "Video Game" doesn't appear in the contest rules. Let's assume, just briefly, that there are people out there who make characters for things OTHER than video games. Scary concept, I know

I thought that at first but then I questioned it since the prize is a unity license.
Let me a clear a few things up. The LIMIT is 40k, but if you model an amazing 15k character that looks better than the 40k submissions you'll be earning bonus points for that.
If you're thinking real time character go that direction. We're not saying you need to make it 40k.
We're sponsored by Unity this time round, but our last contest was more game directed and we found a large number of people asking for a higher limit, so we listened.
Should you do a stellar job not only will you win the prizes but we may contact you personally for possible purchase of the rights (this is on top of the prize you already won) to the model. You may decline. And also possible contact work in the future if interested.

But seriously, 40K is abit excessive, isn't it? Is there a reason for such a high ceiling?

Good luck everyone!
Let me know folks, don't miss out on a good thing!
Yes, I'm a huge fan of Unity! I've been using it for a long time for fun hobby projects. I don't have $1500 to shell out for hobby though... One day.
Just to make sure - in case I enter do I have to hand the license for my model over to you? What if the unlikely case that I win wsomething happens?
No you don't give over the rights at all.
