I have just completed a personal project of mine, which was to create an application that could be used on mobile devices as sort of an interactive portfolio to be used to show of 3d models to well basically anyone you'd like
to show what you do. Now i was wondering, if this might actually be something you guys would consider to be useful for instance to take to a game conference or something like that and show your work to potential employers for example.
If you think so, then what functionality would you like to see in such an application ?
Here are 2 youtube video demonstrations of my app.
The controls are actually better than you might get from these videos, but that is because it's a little hard to record and control the objects at the same time ;-)
Yeah, i see what you mean.. Though the recording is a little too bright, it isn't as awful as it might seem in this video ;-) But if i were to develop a version of this, i would make it customizable to the preferences of the user.
So you could choose your own background and menu buttons for example..
I'd be really interested in buying something like this. I agree on changing the green background, keep to the 'classy minimalist' look. Is this rendering on an ipad/iphone in real time? If so wouldn't an iphone have trouble rendering more high spec models?
What you see in the video is real-time rendering on an iPad 2, but before i have tried buils on an iPhone 3GS and that worked out pretty well, check out a video here:
If you would decide to buy an app like this, what would you be prepared to pay for it and what functionality would you definitely need in terms of user interactivity (adding new models, customization) ?
The above post was meant as a reply to Ikosan's post, in my experience iPhone can push quite a lot of poly's especially when there is basically only one object displayed on screen at a time.

Yup, totally agree with Dustin here. You have the tech running, but that's only a tiny fraction of an app like that. Basically don't look at it through your own eyes - look at it through the eyes of someone playing Angry Birds. Mara 3D dit it well, but it could still be done better.
Yes Dustin, thank you for your helpful advice .. some of those features although not many are already in there like rotate and zoom, but you've provided me with some good points to focus and work on.

What number of poly's would you require for the models you have ? As you might have noticed the objects on display in the iPad video have been smoothed, that egg shaped gold coloured thing is 30052 faces .. After i started working on the iPad i haven't tried iPhone builds anymore, .. But if you could give an indication of what you would expect from it i could try figure that out.
Maybe you might consider to acquire an iPad or Android Tablet your work would be really getting the quality it deserves on such a device ;-)
I have been checking out Mara 3d btw, but i don't think its possible with that app to load and view your own models .. So that would be a big difference in comparison with my app.

I think an interactive app like this would be cool to have at gtd or something.
I must say though, the green background is awful. It'd be nice to have a simple, neutral gradient so it doesn't conflict with textured models.
So you could choose your own background and menu buttons for example..
Jquery, I believe:

Also a decent folder view.
but how does it handle shaders and lighting?
