I have been primarily a Maya user for a while now, but I have been messing around in Max. The thing I like the most in Max is using NURMS (which I think is the Sub D equivalent for Maya...correct me if im wrong there). I also like using smoothing groups to dictate hard edges rather than inserting extra edge loops.
The question is how can I apply this workflow in Maya?
I've tried selecting edges and Hardening the Normals.
I've tried selecting edges and using the Crease Tool.
When I smooth or convert to Sub Ds, it just doesn't keep that hard edge like using smoothing groups or inserting edge loops would.
After tinkering for about an hour I came here. Anyone got any ideas?

I'm beginning to think the same thing. This is fine. I've been using edge loops for a while now anyways.
My usual workflow is with polygons, smooth preview, and edge loops. The 3 key really opened up my workflow a while back.
