My crap concept below. I think I will just try to come up with some ideas in 3d, for the handle.
This is based on some old Darksider concept I found online. I hope it is ok to use old concept and stuff. :S

Really looking forward to seeing some textures on lowpoly!!!
I did up the LP model and baked normal, AO, and have the texture just started. Bit of clean up stuff to do yet and deciding colors...
I have an update on the texture. Not sure if it fits the Darksider style or not. I was thinking about changing the angel/robe deal and the grip areas to a sort of blueish color. Any input would be awesome.

I decided to follow all the cool kids and upload to meshbin so you can twirl it around.
Also not sure if we are able to submit colored spec maps. I used it anyway, for now, because I like it. <_<

Thanks. I like texturing, and this was a lot of fun.:)
I have a couple renders. First is a simple render with a skylight, no shadows or anything fancy. Meant to show the color changes and other minor fixes I made. I tried to get it closer to the colors in the examples provided.
And the second is the fancy arse presentation render with my attempt at some more dramatic lighting and making things look pretty. And following that are the flats.
So this is about final, unless anybody has any critiques they would like to share.
