[DS2] Hammer, Pierate

Alright, giving this a shot.

Decided to go for the Maker theme as it's the one i feel the most comfortable with, seems like the others would really benefit from sculpting, which is not my forte.

Anyway, here's where I'm at after a round in photoshop:


Next step would be a blockout in 3D and possibly a paintover, who knows, proportions might change aswell.

And I'm out.

So I went and started blocking out, fixing proportions and getting all the shapes in there.

Not sure how much I'm currently feeling it, but it's still early so I'll give it some more love.

Righto, after realising I wasn't really liking what I had so far I went and drew some silhouettes:


And as you can probably tell I really liked the first one (which I already had mostly worked out in my head), a while later I had this:

Alright, here's what I'm up to:

Quite satisfied with it being my first serious attempt at sculpting.

Damn, that's one big crystal! Solid progress. I was about to suggest to add damage and such but you seem to already be on it.

Yeah, definately working on getting some good damage in there.

Next update:

Worked on the crystal/rock thing (there's also some slight damage at the other end) and ended up doing a render.

Last update for tonight, pretty big one (image sizewise) aswell, not sure how much further I want to take the sculpting.

Latest update:

Went over it with fresh eyes, got rid of a lot of noise and tightened it up.

Getting to the point where I'm feeling done with the sculpt, will wait for comments and then go over it another time before moving on though.

This looks really good! I think the other side of the hammer looks a little too clean. Even though I know it's not the part being used as much, I think it could use a few more dents/scratches.

Can't really say anything more about the model than what has been said, but I'm not diggin the color scheme for it. Maybe try a few other iterations of colors and see if you can come up with something a little more maker like? It might just be the purple that throwing it off for me.

Alright, so after further cleaning and tightening of the sculpt I went and did a quick and dirty test bake of the stone:


It's on a 512^2 and it still needs lots of cleaning and optimizing, but it's not too bad so far

Really nice concepts, and great work in ZBrush too, this is going to look great. I do kind of wonder how much they are going to be looking at the head size. You've gone about 2X but I can understand how much cooler it looks. Great work so far.

This coming along quite nicely! I wonder though if the crystal stone would soften up like that through wear and tear. Doesn't look as menacing. I'd rather see it breaking up into smaller spiky shapes. Something like this.

@Jvaughan: Thanks, it's not actually that much off from the proxy, except possibly width-wise, but even so it shouldn't be too hard to change it later on. And it's actually sculptris

@AimBiZ: I see what you mean, although I have no idea what broken crystal actually looks like and I have not yet decided what material I'm going for, I might play around for it a bit though.

Anyway, getting more work done:



512^2 and 1800 tris, I'm happy with it so far.

It's hard to say from this angle, but it looks like there is a little gap between the rock/crystal thing and the bracket/bar thing at the top, seems like that should be flush to hold it in place.

Basically it's held on tightly at the sides.

The logic to it makes sense. I think these gaps are just causing visual tension though, rather than being good negative space. It's up to you of course, just a suggestion.

I agree with what sgtnasty said. It looks more tight and solid with those parts flush on the crystal.

So I ended up going with SgtNasty's suggestion and started working a bit on the texture:



Still not too sure on the color sheme though.

Edit: Theres always this possibility also:
