Hey, what a fantastic contest and opportunity this is! Really excited to give this a go. At the moment I'm just plotting some rough designs to see which direction I'm going to go. So far my designs are leaning more towards the demonic theme.
Anyway here are my thumbs so far:

It certainly looks like it came from Hell itself. A very organic looking piece, should be fun to make.

Very nice work. Maybe you could add a small blade to the hilt.

The styling is more than a little reminiscent of the soul edge, but cool nevertheless. Just make sure you take it somewhere unexpected along the way. Mixing up the colors a bit would help a lot in that department.

Thanks bobo, I've added the eye back in now with a change of colour. So yeah here's my progress on the concept. Also unless anybody has any other ideas/suggestions I do believe I'm ready to start modelling

Your concept is going in a great direction. Glad you went with Bobo's suggestions as that stuck out to be Darksider-y to me. I would suggest making the silhouette of the blade part a bit more exciting, then go for it!

Great colours, love your latest update! I do agree with Haiasi, experiment with the blade shape a little bit more. It would make it even more interesting

Now I think you've added way too much micro detail and have lost the over all appeal to the sleeker design. The shape of the blade is great, now, but I'd recommend smoothing out all those crazy edges (seems you added it to the interior part of the axe too).

Cheers again dude, looking at it again with fresh eyes this morning I can see it just messes it up, even looks more like a staff. So I've given it a real sharp blade this time and I think it really works.

Base mesh complete, time to unwrap etc =D Quick question though I'm up to 2259 polys, its that way too far over budget or am I ok?

Tough call. They said you can exceed it because it's just a set number to base it on but I think you're ok. Looking at your mesh I really don't see where else you can save detail.

Well the contest calls for 1,500 tris, not polys, so you're most likely definitely going to have to reduce the count. I'd also wait to get your high poly details in before you settle on a final mesh. This is looking nice, but you can definitely get away with baking those concept details in to simpler shapes.

I would reccomend getting rid of those fleshy parts in the middle of the axe(the ones in the air). To me it seems they look unnecessary and you could save alot of polys by getting rid of it.
