Brian's morning rage has subsided...nitrous has been nuked, all systems returned to normal. For those suffering similarly, you can revert back to your Direct 3d in Customize/Preferences/Viewport/driver settings and have max 2012 work like you expect it to.
Looking forward to Nitrous in max 2015 when it works
I've found Nitrous quite useful for retopo purposes. If I put Max into DX3D it chuggs badly at about 150k polys. Nitrous seems to run fine at quite high poly rates.

Haha. "Currently Brian is rocking slowly back and forth speaking gibberish but we expect him to make a full recovery."
Besides its lack of support for D3D hardware shaders, I'm loving Nitrous. It took a 1.2mil highpoly hardsurface model I was working on and absolutely manhandled it like a boss. D3D display driver just about swallowed its tongue trying to cope with that.

Backface cull = off by default
Yeh, I've had issues with it too. I blame nVidia though.
