Saying hello, and small question regarding 3d modelling.

Hey everyone, hopefully this isn't a bad placement for such a thread. Just wanted to introduce myself and maybe get a little guidance. I'm 29yo, and up to now most of my background has been in 2d work, both graphic design and animation. I'm taking some classes to start getting my feet wet in 3d and figured I'd take the initiative and sign up for these forums.

Now a slight question. I had an idea for a little game.. really more of a level, and so I'm playing with the UDK. Anyway what I want to create is a custom model, a simple thin box (really almost a plane) think a piece of paper or card. Then I want to make it walk ala the cards in like "Alice in Wonderland." Then use a custom material to make a sprite like animation on it. Now I was reading about flipbook materials in the UDK, so I know that's possible. My question is the actual card-like model and animation, is that something I could accomplish in Blender? If so, with how much difficulty? Thanks in advance for any help, and I'm looking forward to learning as much as I can.

Is it possible, sure. How hard will it be for you? Your the only one who can answer that.

    Hi there,
I am setting up a system for 3d modelling and animation, would mainly use maya, mudbox and zbrush!
I am confused on the graphics card needed!(because of my funds I would not be able to go for professional graphics cards), Hence I would like to ask the forum members which of the following radeon HD series graphics cards would be better also I would like to go for a 4gb graphics card!
    1. Sapphire Radeon R9 290 4GB DDR5 TRI-X OC
    2. Sapphire Radeon R9 280X 3GB DDR5 Toxic Edition
    3. Sapphire Radeon HD7950 3GB DDR5 With Boost
    4. Asus Radeon R9 280X 3GB DDR5 ATI PCI E

The reason I am going for Radeon graphics card is because I heard that these graphic cards have better performance in handling high polycounts than the gtx series from Nvidea.
Would be really grateful for feedback!!

Any of these would be fine, but you would only be able to use OpenCL to render stuff via the gpu.
OpenCL is used on ATI card and CUDA on nvidia, they have pretty much the same rendering speed.

Don't use radeon cards with maya. There's a long history of them having display issues, particularly when using real-time shaders. A decent spec Nvidia gaming card will do you pretty well.
