Hello,

I have an object that doesn't display its texture properly.
At the first look I would say it is a normals orientation problem.
But then I flipped the normals and they seemed to be fine.

What could be causing this strange black appearance?

In blender there's a function called: recalculate normals outside.

Is there something similar in 3ds max?

Thx for any help!

Hi, use the flip button.in the edit polygons tab.

It's generally a bad idea to use Edit Poly on top of Unwrap UVW. This makes the model very unstable, prone to problems like this. It is best to collapse the modifier stack after using Unwrap, then do further edits in the base Editable Poly modifier.

To fix this model, I would collapse the stack, then run Reset Xform on it (Utility panel, the hammer icon), then collapse the stack again. If the model is still bad, apply a Normal modifier and Unify.

sure you dont just have a double extrusion/ zero surface area triangel there ... stuff like this can also come from that horrible "cut" tool. try picking individual verts from the problem area and pull them out to see if there is extra faces hidden in there

As an addition to what Eric mentioned there "apply a Normal modifier and Unify."

I had some strange shading problems myself. Adding a normal modifier and unify might fix it sometimes, but in a lot of cases it didn't. In which case, using the same modifier you could try to reset them instead.
