Max Scale Problems

Hey, I'm kinda new to max and I'm having some problems with the scale tool.

I'm trying to scale an object, but it won't let me scale the whole thing on all axis. When I put the cursor in the centre of the scale gizmo, nothing happens. It only lets me scale each axis.

Also, when I scale along one axis, it doesn't actually scale that axis, it does this:

This is the original box. I scale it on the Y axis, but it scales it on the Z and X too.


This is after I scale it. It distorts the shape. I have reset xForm, restarted max. I can't understand why it's doing this?



It does this with every object. Even on a new scene.

You probably switched your scaling mode. Look at the top toolbar, beside the drop down that lets you select the coordinate system. If you click and hold on that button, you can change to different scaling methods. You likely have something wrong selected for what you want to do...

By default the scale hotkey is set to Smart Scale. This will cycle the different scale modes. I always change it to Scale Object, that way it stays on whatever mode I've selected. Same thing for the Select hotkey.
