Please select which of these ideas for a light armoured SAS soldier you think looks the most appealing for a character you would put into a game? Feel free to let me know why you made you choice.
The intended personality of the character usually is helpful for something like this too. Is he suppose to be a generic SAS soldier? For instance, the head on 8 looks to me like an unkept nut, who has spent too much time alone in the woods.
I totally went the other way to the rest of the poeple and went for 1-3 or 4. IMO their outfits make 'sense' to me. A military guy is usually well tidy and functional. I like the gear and body armour of 1 and 8 but think the hair on 1 makes more sense to me.
I was surprised 6 wasn't more popular given the uniqueness.
6 and 7 are actually your two most generic designs.
In general anything with a helmet or a mask (unless they're "standout" designs, like the skull masks in Army of Two, or the tri-light Splinter Cell mask) will usually be read as generic because they're essentially "faceless". There could be anybody in there. You could have a row of people who like this and still plausibly think that they're all different people because you can't see their faces.
For the most part all of your designs are generic because they're almost entirely symmetrical and using standard combat gear. 8 is your most unique simply by virtue of the grizzly ass hair (as Leilei said, games these days don't have enough hair... it makes him more unique than the rest)

It seems like your coming at it more with the stand point of male soldier characters in general being generic given their popularity in the industry. At the end of the day a generic soldier design is uniformed, look at soldiers in Afghanistan they generally all have the same gear on with helmets and osprey vests. None of these designs have those typical choices you would never see a soldier on the news look like say number 5 or even 6.
For example tats might be popular on soldier characters in games but if your character has none then his arms could be just like anyone else's. depending on the design tats can be unique.
... its about the art, man. It aint a popularity contest.
Just the head of 8, floating.
Its not 4chan either so no need to be unreasonable . My brief is about finding what's visually popular in such a character not what I personally like and in any case there isn't anything wrong with a bit of research.

I don't know what is visually popular, but when I saw that image all I saw was a bunch of generic characters and some guy with crazy hair.
Didn't even take the time to recognize the differences between the generic costumes and went for the hair guy straight away.

Generic stealth ninja guy with face paint, a t-shirt and tribal tattoos is the most unique?
Fuzzball headed #8 and manly chested #5 are way cooler.
I like 1's head, with 8's torso, and 4's legs (if the knee pad wasn't on his shin).

How about this, the head of 8 with black gear on instead of olive camo and a Kriss SMG.
