For a little more background, I plan to rig and animate this for use in UDK, a requirement for the module and my first time rigging or animating so it'd be great to get some tips when the time comes. I don't want to spend too much more time on the sculpt as I am attempting to speed up my workflow.
The tortoise is meant to be pre historic, for an idea of scale, it will be comparable to the size of an elephant. It is very old, possibly close to four or five hundred years old. I plan to add more damage to both the shell and his skin and also add plant life growing on his shell.
Here are a couple more images of the sculpt so far.
Looking good. The only real thing I can say right now is that I can see the clay-buildup brush on the shell. I suppose that's not much of a crit, but the box shape left by the brush step size does look a bit unnatural. At any rate though, very nice.
I've finally got round to working on the back legs, I'm quite happy with where this is going now. Thanks for the feedback ysalex, you're right about the shell.. I'm having trouble figuring out how I'm going to do it at the moment.
I'm currently playing around with CAT rigging and I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to keep the shell rigid? If it helps it's a separate element from the from and back legs and head.
The line that Blaisol mentioned, does seem to show up on many tortoise images, but it seems less pronounced than what you have, otherwise its looking awesome.
Thanks guys, I actually manually sculpted the leg detail with the clay tubes brush. I had tried to find a work a round using alphas and masking but I couldn't get it to work how I wanted..
I see your point about the line above the nostrils, as Ryukenblaze pointed out It did have some backing in reality, although I pushed it a bit further than I had seen on an actual tortoise. Now that I've textured it it'd be great to see if you think it works or if I should tone it down a little
