Hi all,
I am new to modelling. I am a part of the team at ULU (udklearning.com). I had a lot of tutorials at my disposal but lacked direction. Thanks to the guidelines outlined in their courses I was able to make some headway.
Below is my first High poly model. I made this after following a tutorial on making an RPG-7. Basically scoured the internet for refference pics and ended up here, lol
This gun, the m249, has a lot of different variations, so this model may not be exactly correct.
Please let me know what you think, I know I still have a long way to go. This was done in 3ds Max
A nice start for a beginner, keep it up. You should throw a sub-D modifier on it (turbosmooth in Max) and see what it does. I can tell ya right now you will see some problem spots. Work with toggling turbosmooth on and off while you work, it should give you a better feeling of whats going on.
What are your overall goals for this model? Display as just a high poly piece, bake to a low poly game-rez? Not knowing you plans makes it difficult to know where to try to lend advice/crit. But two things that jump out at me immediately are the grip and the bi-pod. The grip looks to wide for anyone to actually hold, and the bipod looks kind of flimsy in its current state, almost like a stiff breeze could blow it over
This model is supposed to be a high poly piece to bake onto a low poly. The grip is definately too wide the bipod could definately use some more work. Those things are pretty obvious. There are also some small errors that I have to learn to fix in there also. I guess that as I try to model more I will learn to fix those.
keep working on the grip its still to boxie make it more round, like you would want to put your hand around it. also on the ammo the links go up not down "brass to the grass."
Wow guys, thanks for the comments. I may have to remodel the grip to get it more rounded. I'll work on that.
Not sure what you mean on the links on the ammo. I tried to make it as close to one reference picture I came across. Give me some more details and I can work on that also.
Thanks
I believe he is referring to the the clips that are holding the bullets, yours are upside down according to this reference. And if you are planning on baking this down to a low poly you might want to put turbo smooth on all of your model. The way you have a lot of your geometry isn't going to bake well and you will get many smoothing errors. Also, it is good practice to try to make quads as much as possible, for high poly modeling, though not always necessary.

Looking good man!
Thanks fo the comments so far
well the basic shape of the handgrip is abit more rounder then boxy
Thanks for the comments
I can tell that the ironsight is too thick though.
Also, the grip is a lot more round and organic looking than your model.
Here are a few images where you can see the grip clearly:

Keep it up! Looking forward to seeing this progress!
