This is going to be a dump of wip images, and whatever I end up finishing. Constructive critiques would definitely be appreciated, but if not well whatever. Anyways as a main subject I mostly do guns, and other weapons. So if your interested in that might as well check back here. Follow my twitter to be notified whenever I post new stuff here so you don't have to guess when there's updates.

So first up is a Gyrojet Rocket Pistol :

Wires:

Here it is fully baked onto the low, rendered in Marmoset Toolbag, at 4717 tris using 2048^2 occlusion and normals.

Second is a Russian WW2 era TT-33 Tokarev pistol:
I did it awhile back so the bake isn't as good, and I've only been tweaking the textures now. Rendered in Marmoset Toolbag, at 4725 tris using 2048^2 diffuse, specular, gloss and normals. I'm thinking of doing a more damaged and scuffed up version as well.

Marmoset Toolbag, at 4717 tris (pistol only) using two material sets (pistol and carbine stock) both use 2048^2 diffuse, spec, gloss and normals,
Will probably downsize all the maps though. Wood not final, but aside from that, anybody have suggestions as it is right now?

Tweaked the textures with feedback from other forums. I think it's almost done now.

Anyways back on the road to being a professional:
Textures near finalized I think, not much detail on the carbine's metal bar, but shh don't notice that.
    gyrojetcarbinetexture01.jpg
    gyrojetpistoltexture01.jpg

And lighting comparison through the defaults in Marmoset toolbag.
    gyrojetlightcompare.jpg

    And hey free public usage:
    Bake Files: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?zqqb8pw7use76t8
UV-Release Files: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?kmm6fil16hwcq66 (Normals may not work properly in Max, baked in xNormal, thus bake files are also available)
The only thing I ask is that when these are used, I am credited.
*Personally if a commercial game used this and I was credited I think it'd be a good reference for my resume, but that's just my opinion.

The Gyrojet is pretty simple in terms of modelling complexity, so I'm looking to take on more complex subjects. Here's a Beretta CX4 Storm, it's not done yet, but it's getting there.
    berettacx4.jpg

I'll take suggestions for challenging guns to model. Well any hard surface subject that exists in real life. Next I'm thinking something really detailed, say a PKM machine gun, or a vehicle, maybe a F-16 or an AH-1Z.

I did the animations and textures so if you have any suggestions for those I'd love to hear them.

Will finish up the CX4 soon.

    Thanks!

Been experimenting with dark polymer and metal base textures.
I think the polymer came out alright, but the metal is not where I want it.
Should probably be a darker diffuse to better match the look of AR-15 metal.

Making a Surefire M952V weapon light. Marmoset renders, 1024^2 textures sheets.
About 3500 tris for the low, could be lower but ehhh rebaking AO and having to do new uvs ain't worth my time. There is a wire that connects the rear cone to the bottom pressure pad, but I figured it's unique and simple enough to be created for each specific configuration and just applying a plain colour material.
    surefirem952v02.jpg

Heh just noticed I don't actually have a model with picatinny rails to mount this accessory on posted here. Well that will change in the future.

Going around finishing up old stuff. I was on a roll until I tried my hand on doing textures. I really waste way too much time just adjusting the material base values between the diffuse/specular/gloss maps. Is it common practice to have a library of base materials setup? What I'm thinking is just using render to texture a basic material with the specular/gloss values where I want them as a base. Or maybe buy Ddo and see if that helps any. Do any of you guys use the Marmoset toolbag as your 3d preview while developing your texture? I mean it's great for final presentations, but the image based lighting and the large colour differences between backgrounds don't really seem like a neutral setting for getting the reflectance values down properly.
    doubletapbaked.jpg
There are a few inaccuracies/ missing details on this, I could use that as an excuse to go back a stage and fix it up, but I figure more time spent on texturing practice is more valuable.

And also an optic (untextured still).

Should actually finally finish a rem 700 action so I can finish this M24 and the M40 that has been sitting unloved and unfinished for god knows how long.
Well sure let's pimp that wip out too since I'm mentioning it.
    5kig.jpg
    6huj.jpg
Boy what's next, a XM2010 ? Uh oh gotta avoid the gun porn so I can focus.

That said, there are quite a number of great gun modellers out there who also happen to be Russian making Russian things that look amazing.
One could say they are an inspiration to make more things to a higher caliber, or one could say they are a source of burning jealousy and that any personal crusade to match and best the level of quality and quantity of their subjects in a rapid amount of time is a foolish and self destructive activity.
Let's just leave it at both.
    9l5s.jpg
    cyos.jpg
Trying out new techniques for modeling the annoying bits of pistol slides ( the rear unsymmetrical curved slide rail cutouts and the like ).

The TT-33 also got this treatment and reworking since I like to go back and look at old things and see all the horrible bits and re do the same subjects, but I think three different wips in one post is enough for now.

So some parts can take hell of a long time to model once, redo, and just take longer than expected to figure out the shapes and flows. This is one of them:
    y3z5.jpg
    cqqx.jpg
Overkill on the detail perhaps, but I had the refs and was doing it already so I figured why not take the extra steps. Only missing the firing pin spring, but I did that and took it out since it just makes it pain rescaling lengths between short and long action receiver lengths.
    nrlc.jpg
    uytr.jpg
It took a few days, and it probably take some more just finishing all the various parts.
Still gotta do 2 scopes, tweaking the stocks for better fits, one bipod, and flesh out the accessories, and these are just for the M40A3-A5 and M24 SWS variations.
For more modularity I'd like to do parts for a M40A1, civilian BDL/CDL, the XM2010 chassis, for sure, and maybe a varmint, M24A2/3, the JAE-700 stock, and AICS stock later on, but I'm getting ahead of myself. If you have any parts suggestions send them my way!

Before you ask, no it's not a full set of mechanically working parts, just the details that can be seen from the surface.
I don't know how useful this effort will be, perhaps when I really do get to making a gun customization program it may shine, but for general usage the majority of the trigger group will never be seen.

Still gotta finalize the mount, do some scope covers, make a more accurate trigger guard and magazine, and bipod.
Then it's off to M24 land, with it's own set of accessories to worry about.

I think you'd be waiting for quite a while if you're looking to automate easily-readable hardsurface UVs. :p Hardsurface modeling looks excellent, though! This may be an unpopular statement here, but I think you can definitely afford to tighten some of those edges up.

    wmEAOyu.jpg

Yeah I'm getting back into LP and bakes now:
    0l4dTuC.jpg
9792 tris if interested, I'm surprised it's under 10k myself too, could definitely be lower.
UV mapping and tweaking the test bakes takes almost as much time as modelling the HP, or it's probably me being slow after awhile of not doing it.

Ever get stuck having the HP model 90% done in a day or two, but then get to unimportant, barely seen parts and then your speed and efficiency just drops?
Aside from the barrel and stock, the pernach was done a week ago, but dragging it out to a week just to do those two parts was ridiculous.
Probably just a sleep deprivation thing I guess.

Back, crunching out a bunch of models for a Gamebanana Skin Contest, this time all themed around Finland's Winter War against the Soviets.

Got a long way to go...

    Suomi KP-31
    HbMup21.jpg

    Soviet M91/30 Mosin-Nagant
    3btxxI0.jpg
    sV90EE4.jpg
    wVoosDt.jpg
    fmD3Q84.jpg
I spent wayyyy too much time on the mosin-nagant (dat receiver and bolt), and I still have more to do. I still have to make the correct Finnish furniture - probably can only do the M27 otherwise I'll have no time to finish the others, and not only the Finnish variations, but also the different scopes and carbine variations, but since I'm not doing any Soviet stuff for the contest those can be pushed past the deadline.

Bolt action rifles, they looks so simple at first, then you get to the complex interlocking machining of the receiver and bolt and there goes your time and sanity.

    d32lBv1.jpg
Also PPsh-41 (still a WIP, not intended for contest, just goes with mosin)

and the current states of the other weapons which are intended for the contest,
    Dvv9wwB.jpg
Lahti L-35, still have to work on the grip, magazine, bolt, sights, and switches. Probably a day or two to finish.
    rLEZ0Ga.jpg
Lahti L-39, barely started, but it's simpler than the mosin's receiver so shouldn't take too long, maybe a day or two.
    czSRZQd.jpg
Lahti-Saloranta M26, top cover, controls, sights, bolt, mag, - this one should be simple to finish in a day.

So at current speed projections 5 days of more HP modeling, leaving only 12 days for bakes, textures and animations. I can finish all the HP models but I probably won't have enough time to bake and texture them all. Probably have to shelve the L-39, start the bakes for the mosin and suomi now, and see what I can do about the L-35 and M26.

For non-fans of IDW Transformers More Than Meets The Eye comics, the character is a new big bad called Tarn.
If you were ever a fan of Transformers, I cannot recommend this comic book series enough - very good!

This is based of an original model by UltimateTransFan, but has heavy editing by me. Was my first try using the Doublesmooth technique for making the HP, not perfect but very helpful results. Lots of other automation and short cutting involved, used Blender's auto UV packing since packing it by hand would be hell with all the different shapes, and because auto UVs still suck, dDO for simple texturing because I suck and just running dDo with a 2048 threatened to crash my system. Tricount is about 20,000 - down from it's original 50,000 and using 2048 diffuse/specular/gloss/normal/glow. It really does need 4096 because the texel management is so bad from the auto unwrap, but I can't work at that resolution without setting my pc on fire.
