Oh man, that's really clever with the fur LRoy! I understand what you've done from the images you posted, but if you've got something more detailed planned I'd love to see that too
Great job! You made some huge strides with this model. However, one problem remains... where's the little toy pistol?! Haha, oh well, looks ace without it too.
Hehe, are you tired of your model? Just give a break, some weeks or months... then you can come back and do additional things you should wish. But if you don't want, I think's it's amazing enough already. Really, incredible job. Only thing you could do for us is post a bigger image, and maybe other angles. So we can save in our HDs and envy you forever.
You did really well capturing the spirit of the concept, not to mention the technical stuff all looks top-notch. I'm in agreement with everyone else here: well done.
So this is a super old thread, but I just realized I never really went over how I did the fur. I went back and took a few screencaps, hopefully it's useful.
Here's the fur texture and alpha. The alpha is nothing fancy. It's just a generic noise pattern. I found it's better to have it not be a solid white but a bit grey.
So here's the coat separated from the body mesh. It looks like it's one piece, but it's actually broken off into two. There is the fur and the solid jacket.
The fur itself is completely transparent with the alpha. These are "strands" of fur that come out of the coat.
So if you take a closer look with just the fur mesh you can see all of the little points that make up the strands of fur.
The actual fur piece itself is just the base coat mesh inflated out to create the shells. The more you do this the better the fur will look but the more tris it will use. This was just a folio piece so I did it about 5-6 times.
Then what I did was to use a move brush to comb the verts to follow the direction I wanted the fur strands to flow in so they weren't sticking straight out.
Looking back at it, I would maybe give it it's own texture. It's only a small part on a 2k map so you could probably get nicer results with more resolution.
big thanks to jacquechoi for helping me out with the fur.
