Feds shut down MegaUpload, no trial, done without SOPA

" One of the world’s largest file-sharing sites was shut down Thursday, and its founder and several company executives were charged with violating piracy laws, federal prosecutors said.

An indictment accuses Megaupload.com of costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated films and other content. The indictment was unsealed one day after websites including Wikipedia and Craigslist shut down in protest of two congressional proposals intended to thwart online piracy.

Welcome to the world where when you don't fight for your rights, you watch as they are systematically stripped away.

This also means that SOPA, PIPA, and ACTA are nothing more but tools of censorship. They won't even impact piracy and those who made the bills know this. They made the bills with another agenda in mind entirely.

I was always under the impression that you could post "3ds max complete with crack WAREZ" on Megaupload and they wouldn't bat an eye as long as they were getting revenue.

The most concerning part of this is that MegaUpload complied with all copyright infringement notices. They routinely removed videos and files that received such notices.

They were in compliance with the DMCA, and according to the DMCA, the FBI has acted outside of their stated powers.

TONS of websites are being DDoS'ed at the moment. Some are describing it as the beginnings of the biggest internet attacks of this nature as well. Not surprising, a day after the biggest online protest ever.

I never understood the purpose of DDOS'ing websites that no one uses anyway. If they want to make a real impact, they should just DDOS porn sites and state that they will not stop until the government gives in to their demands. I'm fairly confident that it would take mere days for the society to fall into chaos and revert to some form of primitve tribalism.

Oh no anonymous is temporarily slowing down or briefly stopping websites that nobody goes to for a short period of time with no permanent damage.

    That'll learn'em.

its that kinda thinking that makes me wish they would attack face book and get everyone's panties in a giant knot.

We slowly become like china and the only time people will get angry is when they cant update how drunk they got or like someones stupid image of a cat.

Which reminds me *goes to pedro's page and like's his new cat video"*

This is my stance on it.

Making statements like DDoS's are more effective than you think.

Just yesterday, internet activism doubled SOPA/PIPA's congressional opposition.

Do we need another thread about this?

Lets keep it to the SOPA thread, remember, this is polycount, not thepiratebay forums or whatever.
