I'm having a problem with an opacity map I'm working on currently, I don't really know how to describe it so I'll link to two images. The background for my OP is white, whereas the glass transparency color on it is grey.
Not a max user, but in maya there is an option called "polygon transparency sorting", which tells maya not to assume that an entire object is see-through, but to work on a per-poly basis (I think that's what it's doing, anyway). I would look for a similar option in max, since it looks like the same issue.
