UiToolkit does that too and its free, it even supports multi sprite sheets one for regular resolution and another one 2x for retina.

Yeah UIToolkit is amazing. I have messed with it as well and it's a very awesome solution. It has a little learning curve to set it up though and that kinda slowed me down. My solution here is a much simpler aspect of that, but it's geared towards teaching what's going on behind the scenes with these things.
