Unwrapping 101

I'm having a bit of a problem that up until now I've managed to get ignore.

When unwrapping a beveled cylinder what's common practice?

Here's what i'm unwrapping and the issue i'm having is with the chamfered bits.

I'd simply take off the caps either end, and then put a seam down the under side of the whole thing. Possibly another seam where the handle meets the top part.

Similar to what gilesruscoe said, I would add seems around each part that has a different texture. To be more specific a seam along the dividers between the metal and wood parts, as well as a seam down the bottom. Then I would just select each part separately and use pelt mapping.
