I'm sorry to hear this too and hope these guys find a new good job soon.
I'm curious though, what kind of people do they usually lay off after a project is finished? I read something about mostly QA people? I guess it's usually the juniors and the rest of the non-senior people?
No one is untouchable. That should be a lesson in life.
Yeah, with Hironobu Sakaguchi kicked out of Square or Steve Jobs kicked out of apple or Jason Rubin parting ways with Naughty Dog I wouldn't be surprised if the next one to get canned would John Carmack.
Even if you founded the damn place you better beware.
Yeah, with Hironobu Sakaguchi kicked out of Square
He walked as far as I am aware?
Was John Carmack one of the 30 layoffs lolololol.
Sorry to hear about people losing jobs? Would you have come across Carmack much Virtuosic? I'd probably lose bladder control if I ever met him :poly136:
I'm actually moving to Austin in February... so yea. Honestly i'm glad to be out of that studio.. wasn't a fan of the engine, and i feel like I have more to contribute working for a studio who uses UDK anyways.
layoffs suck but being laid off from iD makes you a rock star so don't forget that when job hunting - for instance, why move to Austin to work with UDK, why not North Carolina (where it makes it's lair)?
Tbh I can't say I was all that surprised with the layoffs since Rage didn't do as good everyone hoped it would.
Very sorry to hear about you being let go Ryan. But Austin is reach on studios(or at least Texas is) so I hope you'll land on your feet pretty soon. Best of luck, man.
I was among the unlucky ones this morning. Yet, id was everything i dreamed it would be. And it was an awesome place to work. I wish my id buddies the best of wishes. Really looking forward to see what they do in the future.
For now, i feel like this is the next chapter on my life. I will problably sit at home and work on stuff thats been on my head for a while on the coming weeks. So that should be fun!
This really sucks, sorry to hear, for those affected.
It's sad that if a game isn't a major blockbuster it seems to be considered a huge failure. The general public's expectations these days are downright pathetic.
I just wanted to say that a few of the guy's that got let go I would highly vouch for, as they were previous students of mine and bring a lot to the table. Not sure d1ver if this was where your comment of "fresh local grads" is coming from. But after looking at your work, I would say maybe you should comment less on other's work especailly when they just lost their jobs, and concentrate on your own work. Maybe I am a bit biased, but just hate it when people talk shit during a time that's not needed.
Man, that sucks! Sorry to hear about this. I've been slowly playing through Rage, and I love it. I wondered what kind of numbers it would have had to sell to justify the long dev cycle though.
I know you guys will land on your feet though. So much amazing talent coming out of that studio.
@raul - Always loved your art, and cheers on having the best outlook possible for this. If you've got a little money saved up, this might be the perfect time to consolidate your art/skills, bust out some new personal art for fun, and find yourself an even better position in a few months.

Hey man, sorry, I didn't mean to offend anyone and especially the people you consider to bring a lot to the table. I respect what you guys accomplish at id and you personally for your great work.
All I meant to say that Rage was obviously a huge project to finish and it seemed logical that the studio was ramping up for the final stretch. And once again from my very limited point of view from things I saw wondering around forums and linkedins I got a feeling that some recent id hires weren't your typical rockstar artists. I have no proof to back this up and even if I had I wouldn't. It's just the impression I got and that's why I keep repeating that it is my very limited opinion.
I never said that anyone should be laid off and I feel very sorry for everyone who lost their jobs. Especially for the great artists I know. I've been jobless for 2 years, so I know how that's like.
If that mesage still bothers you just let me know, and I'll delete it.
Sorry for your friends.
Secondly, from what one could gather lurking the internets, I've seen ID hire quite a bunch of fresh local grads that didn't really impress me all that much. Though it is just my limited pov.
Missed this the first time. Son, never go full retard! Aside from insulting people that have just lost their jobs, you are criticizing id for raising local talent instead of getting very established artists in from around the world, which they easily could do (look at Blizzard). Surely thats a practice that should be praised, not mocked? Seriously dude.

Wow, sorry. Never meant to insult anyone. I figured it's logical that studios ramp up in the fastest and most affordable way and I don't think that everyone here has to be impressed with everyone who has ever got a job. It doesn't mean you ain't happy for them or wish them the best.
Never meant to criticize anyone. Maybe it's some sort of a cultural gap or something 'cause I most honestly didn't mean no ill will. I guess I'd rather remove that comment after all.
Very sorry.
lets keep this thread positive, who's hiring that can help those in need?
Would be pretty funny and fateful had John Carmack been laid off to join Kingsisle. A Hall/Carmack powerhouse reunion not since '93!
Also sorry to those laid off which is a shame, because it's mostly due to powers beyond control (Video hardware manufacturers' support incompetence ruined RAGE)
Oh snap, hopefully everyone affected gets picked up soon. If nothing else, Rage was an achievement in game art that you've now all got under your belts.
I take it that most of the layoffs were not the usual QA positions then?
Replies
I'm guessing its due to Rage not living up to expectations. Shit buzz.
very sorry to hear folks.
any polycounters affected?

Hope all affected land on their feet. Although with the kind of talent they have there, I'd imagine it won't be too much of an issue.

i guess some CEO didnt make enough profit to buy another yacht.
hope everyone moves onto better things
really? Which ones??
It slipped in price across all platforms very very fast, I was surprised. I guess maybe the era of the hella long development cycle is over.

Who thought it would be a good idea to break in a new game IP during the Uncharted/MW3/Battlefield3/ArkhamCity/DarkSouls release window???
It's a genuine marketing failboat.

At the same time, d1ver's artwork has nothing to do with his opinion.
