Assistant Art Director
The Assistant Art Director reports to the Art Director. This is a management position with a broad range of responsibilities. The Assistant Art Director will support the Art Director in guiding and refining a strong artistic vision for our most exciting games. The Assistant Art Director ensures a consistent artistic style is maintained and works within technical constraints to create thrilling titles that resonate with our target audiences. The position requires a pro-active and communicative attitude and strong cooperation with all departments, including: Art, Engineering, Design, Audio and Marketing to ensure the art vision is shared by all. This job requires travel between our Munich headquarters and our development studios.
Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities:
Support defining the artistic style and creative vision of games
Drive the art vision throughout the development process
Establish, communicate and manage department objectives to meet project schedules
Encourage the creative development and contribution of each staff member
Set up and oversee production pipelines (both large and small)
Work independently on major design initiatives
Contribute to a collaborative environment with all disciplines
Collaborate with game play designers, story writers, game writers, and other internal and external project members to deliver on a unique gaming experience
Support the Producer in setting clear creative goals and deliverables; focus efforts across the Producing Team to ensure a cohesive experience across the game and service
Assist Game Designers in executing and documenting the creative vision, from high concept to complete GDD
Establish, communicate, and manage department objectives to meet project schedules
Ensure accuracy of art scope, schedule, and budget within the Producing Team
Develop and sign off on creative estimates and ensure high quality execution of all deliverables
Support inter-department communications as they relate to art design
Identify inconsistencies and opportunities for improvement within the creative process
Evaluate multiple concepts and solutions for various projects and determine which ideas are worth pursuing
Help defining visual and art standards/processes and ensure all creative material is consistent and in accordance with budget and vision
Create formal and informal critique, and provide effective feedback for individual and team development and the development of the product
Inspire people with your ideas
Secondary Responsibilities:
Research industry trends in game development in regards to art design and technologies
Maintain the art section of our research database
Develop good and productive relationships with external partners
Interact positively and effectively with employees at all levels within the organization, as well as with customers, prospects, and vendors
Requirements
Primary Skills and Abilities:
A Bachelors Degree in Art from an accredited school
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Strong decision-making and conflict resolution skills
A passion for video games
Conceptualization skills such as sketching, illustrating, drafting and painting
Experience with lighting, composition, color studies, painting and storyboards
Familiarity with industry standard tools and software
Ability to work in a broad range of visual styles
Ability to respond elegantly to difficult creative changes, even late in the process
Patience and a strong sense of humor
Fluency in English, both verbal and written
Willingness to learn and to follow guidance
Preferred Experience:
Three or more years experience in the game industry
Two published games to your credit
Experience in art recruiting
Experience in working with outsourced art teams and art integration
Management experience leading a team of artists
Experience designing interfaces
