I jut got offered a job, and I said I would love to do it for the experiance.

But before I start I would like to make some models, and get abit used to the style.

He said thats fine, and I just got an email from him with my first model I have to make for studios game.

simply put this is what he said with the aid of a mood board which only had a character and a face and some enviroments (more color choice than anything and if he was asking me to texture something I would be fine). He would like me to make a character model, it must be lowpoly and must be able to be textured by anyone, it must also have interesting shapes... no concepts no nothing really.

I have to be onest... it's extreamly vague and dosen't tell me what I should make. What the poly count should be ( even though its lowpoly )

My question here is this: How do companys/ studios go about this?

I thought that I would be given concept art or at least some good refrence.

Thanks Micah.

Communicate! Maybe its a test if you are "brave" enough to ask if you have misunderstood or not gotten every information.
I come from a wc3 background, lowpoly back then was like 500 tris per character :)

About the concept i would say just make something you like to make. Think of something yourself, but in the universe of what you will be doing when u work there...
(e.g. no scifi when they are only making fantasy games)
He wants to see how artistical you are. An artist shouldnt always just carry out the concept. Maybe he wants to see if you can look beyond that and even make good suggestions when you get some concept art later on? I dunno...

I have already sent him a Email. The problem Im faceing is this... I know what the game is but at the moment I believe that Im the only 3d artist and there is no real art yet, which means I have no idea of the proportions and size of the character, if I had an idea of size and weight I could go off that and the get a responce from what I make ( and he has given me freadom to go about it anyway I like) saying this I don't know if thr character has to have a hat, hair, the types of clothes.

It's low poly and the clothes and details might be added through the texture. but he hasn't told me if this is the case.

I have asked him allot of questions and asked if not for concept art atleast a mood board for characters he would like to see in the game.

I have a image of the way I want to make it, but what I want is/might not be what he/they want.

what engine are they working in, since that will be a big factor with the scale you build your models at.

I think your misinterpreting what I mean, I know what the scale is. I ment the scale of the character, dwarf proportions, normal proportions etc.

xXm0RpH3usXx: Just got an email back and you were on the spot... He wanted me to do my style with the little info he had given me, he didnt want me to know much because he wanted to see where I would go with it and then see where they could go from that because they haven't nailed the art style.

It makes me happy to think that they have HIGH expectations from me and I intend to reach or rise above them!

    Thanks everyone.

maybe draw out some concepts first.around 5 or 10.they could even be silhouettes.then present those to him and let him chose which he thinks is best.that would atleast give you a starting point.

There are a lot of red flags in your description of the 'company' and their rmethods, and since you aren't being paid and aren't getting meaningful critique or guidelines I would be very careful about this. Since this isn't a real job, make sure you only stay with it if you are getting actual valuable experience out of it.
