Hello fellow polycounters! These are some real time FX I am currently polishing for my demo reel as I come closer to graduating Full Sail. Any feedback and critique would be greatly appreciated!
That looks cool to me !
Maybe add some information about their uses ? Or what you were trying to achieve ?
And of you have a realtime result whit other assets of the game even if they're not yours, you may show it ?
Also if is for a portfolio : change the name of the video and add your personal information at the begining or end of the vid
PS : and why not try to show some different angle / view for each FX ?
It's a great start, I like the colors. I would consider dropping the ice one, or remaking it as a different type of effect, it's too close to the tutorial. The explosions look decent, but it's hard to tell on the black background; would be nice to see how your particles/smoke dissipate. The torch sells but is an easy effect, would be huge points if you can create a larger fire.
Looks like a combo between the eat 3d particle dvd and the tutorial made by polycounts own Virtuosic ?
A little bit of a change up on things. You did a wonderful job making the ice look realistic. They are nice effects, but I think if you really want to push your real, show them in a level. Not just the particle editor.
Hi,
Nice job on these, the fire looks great.
I will second Warby's question though, how optimized are these effects? It's not too hard to make decent looking effects, the problem is making them look great within the extreme limitations of the game.
Hey thanks a lot for the awesome feedback everyone! About the ice effect, I saw this effect done by asesin, http://vimeo.com/17189348 , and wanted to see if I could do something like it. And Virtuosic's tut helped me figure out how to animate the spawn point, which was boggling me a lot, thanks Virtuosic! I may take out the failed attempt at the digger from GOW 3, just because I don't want to rely on other peoples ideas to create my own Thanks again everyone for very useful feedback and I will continue to post updates!
Also, Their not as optimized as i had hoped but one of my teachers told me that because it is for my portfolio that optimizing these isn't that big of an issue, until your on the job when you will make them pretty dense and cut it back when your lead tells you to and its slowing the game down.

Your mesh emitters should shrink a short while after they've come to a stop, its a common practice in games so that they don't just disappear.
