Possible to paint over top extrusions?

Hi another question since im not at mu pc and i am iphone vrainstorming ..... Is it possible in zbrush or mudbox paint witj a brush so to only get in the cavitiesor on the top extrusions? With a certain fallof may be? Is something i used to do when paintibg miniatures eith a brush ...

It has a curve for falloff, along with blur and intensity.

there's something similar in mudbox, the drybrush. honestly though, not sure it works for painting
