Thanks for the enthusiasm. I have some time off this week so I'll be finishing him in short order. He's a little heavy on the poly count but I might only trim down a little... the specs did say plus a couple hundred poly's. Besides, it's for fun anyway.
I tried doing a bit of the Blue-ringed stuff and it didn't work out quite right in my tests... I might still try to work it in. It's why I haven't really touched the head...I still have some work to do on the main body but this is where I'm at right now.
I'm pretty much done with the color pass unless something really bugs me (or anyone else for that matter) in the next day or so. I'm going to do a spec map and then a platform and call it good.
you got realy lots of very small highlights on the ships and on his pants wich, imo is lowering the readability of the forms.
also some ambient occlusion would suit him very well. especialy on his back below the octupus.
Cool. Thanks for the paint over. I'm still not understanding what you mean about those highlights "lowering the readability of the forms." My confusion is coming from a place of vocabulary. Since highlight, midtones and shadow work together do define form I'm a little bit unsure how they are lowering the readability. Highlights usually mean an edge. If it's next to shadow it tends to mean a crack. You've highlighted both of these categories. Are you saying you don't like the highlights or that they are too strong?
Side note: My web server is down for the time being... may be up later today. Not sure.
sry maby i was not clear about this, i ment the highlights are too strong. the placing is okay.
with lowering the readability i ment, that when i first saw this i thought "wow a lot of white dots on the ships" before i recognized that its just the edges of the woodplanks.
if you got em on a seperate layer i would recommend to just lower theyr intensity by 20%.

quick base colors and lightmap... don't know if I'm sold with this color scheme yet.

@Goeddy Thanks for your feedback. I'm not sure what you mean about the highlights. Could you elaborate for me?
so i marked the spots im talking about with red circles.
also i drew in some ambient occlusion, he could realy need some more.
