well, i decided to go with the hair as a separate object as suggested by all the helpful folks out there..
..didn't actually get far with the hair though as i started making the body, but did begin where i think the hairline should be.
*neck is not attached correctly yet as is still a separate object whilst waiting for any crits on head/body proportions before attaching (i know its hard to judge as rest of body not complete, but any early thoughts appreciated)

aims:
- beginner games character model (the first of many i hope, if it is successful)
- hoping it can be rigged for animation later (i want to be able to pose it, so any crits on problems with it being animated really helpful)
- trying to keep polys to a low
- will stylize body and head more after 'standard' shape achieved
- aiming to make a 'standard' body shape that can be tweaked to create more characters later
