Smoothing groups prevent me from making UV maps in 3ds Max 2012!

The title explains it really. For some reason I can not have smoothing groups and UVs at the same time. :poly134:

I have no idea why. I make a UV and then smoothing groups. I then go back to the UV to see if it is still there and the editor is empty and I can not select any faces to create a new one.

I make smoothing groups and then a UV and same thing happens! What is going on?

I am in dire need of help!

Collapse the modifier stack before you edit the Smoothing Groups. Editing them below the UVW Unwrap modifier shouldn't cause the UVs to be reset, but changing the vertex count always does, and you're probably doing this inadvertently somehow.

I tried making a box, smoothing groups enabled and then apply the UVW unwarp thing but it doesn't work.

Do you exit sub-object mode before adding the Unwrap modifier? You should. Sub-object selections are passed up the stack, so the upper modifiers are limited to just the selected bits.

Holy Batman! I didn't know you could click the buttons to exit them again. It appears to work!

Yes. If you see a yellow & red highlight, you're in sub-object mode.


If that's on, and you go up the stack, you'll see icons on the right side of the upper modifiers, like the 3 plusses here...

Wonderful. I could export it to ZBrush with the smoothing groups and the UV. Problem solved!

Sadly downloads from Zbrush Central just abort for me right now. No idea why.

GoZ should be included automatically with your zbrush download, it's pretty much built in now.
