If your looking to do particles I recommend just messing around, its a fairly easy system to learn and each element of it is documented with a clear indication of what it does. The rest is just down to coming up with an idea of what you want. If your wanting to make FX's that tie to weapons etc.. I recommend replacing existing material to begin with and see what you can come up with.
But generally speaking the particle engine is the same core concept as any other, so once you know where the buttons are the rest is play time!
I have cryteks official video tutorial on particle fx and the other Introduction to Cryengine 2 series. If that'd help out at all, I could upload them on youtube if wanted?
I know they took them down sometime before launching the new crymod website. But I don't see them differing in information on how much Cryengine 3 has been updated since version 2.0
