3D max spine vertices welding problem

Well, i been trying to solve this problem, and i can't seems to find and good trick.

I am practicing modeling with spines, and i want to weld two vertices into one, i mirror it half of the model and, when i try to weld two vertices nothing happen.

The vertices has to be 'open' to weld them..remove the vertical lines and it should work.

Delete those two splines then try to weld the vertices again, it will work
