hello.
this is my first post here. i had posted my earlier progress on a couple of other forums, but activity seems to be slow there and i wasn't getting many crits to help me progress(not that i don't appreciate the crits i had recieved).

i am just a hobbyist and started of from the 'joan of arc' head tutorial online (apparently it's quite well-known).

after spending many hours on the model and looking at others work to reference, this is my progress.

i set out to make a model that was aimed at use for computer games (hoping it can be rigged for facial animation).

i hoped to make it as low poly as possible but also be able to keep as much of an 'organic' feel as possible and make the face resemble the reference face i used (liu yi fei) with a slight touch of stylization perhaps..(bigger eyes , bigger ears perhaps?).

hoping to make a start on hair and body very soon, and hope the most difficult part for me is over (the face). it has been really hard to try and get a good resemblance to the reference.

as this has been my first attempt and step into modelling a character, i would really really be so grateful to all comments , advice, crits.

i am really keen to learn and make some good progress

many thanks :)

I don't understand why it isn't showing up on yours. Odd.

yeah, pretty frustrating as i guess if folks cant see images in the post, then the crits and comments will be 0...

Looks really good for your first time! Matches the ref pretty well. I think you could rework some of the edge-loops around the mouth, the edges should ring around the mouth and follow the flow of the muscle a bit better. It looks like you were aiming for this but missed the mark in a few spots.

From the side-view there's a polygon right above the ear that's at a pretty skewed angle against the flow. Shouldn't matter much because that's not an area that would deform much, but it bothers me.

thanks for the advice Shiniku, much appreciated.

first time, and very slow progress, it took me countless hours to get to this point. plenty of back and forth, changing things all the time.
i think i am 90% happy with the shape now. still a few things need cleaning up, and then the hair, eyes..

had a quick play with the mouth loops as suggested. i think this its better?

vavavoom The problem you are having with the images is because you are using the link to the image-shack page, rather the image itself.

So rather than using: "http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/812/mouthloops.jpg/" (which is the link to the web page,) look down the right side of the page and copy the url under "Direct Link" and use that instead, e.g.: "http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/1475/mouthloops.jpg"

In some browsers you can right click an image and click "copy image url" or open the image in a tab by itself and copy the url from the address bar.

And the head model is coming along well. Its well worth taking the time to learn the basics of modelling a head and good topology. While its not advisable to work straight off other peoples work (as oppose to photo reference) I always found it useful glancing over the wireframe models of other great character artists always helped me better understand good topology.
