Align Maya joint to hinge line axis

Hi all. I'm trying to rig an aircraft in Maya for export to UDK. I have one root joint around the top center of the aircraft, and then a joint for each control surface. Each control surface is a sub-object. At each control surface, I have a locator set and aligned to the rotation axis of the hinge line; so if I rotate the subobject, it rotates up and down properly. However, I can't seem to get the joint to align properly. I was hoping maybe I could either turn the locators into joints, or copy the rotation data over (for some reason the locator's rotation offset, when copied into the joint, does not work). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

EDIT: Nevermind, solved the issue by re orientating the root joint to the world axis. :)
