Maya 2012: Render Quality Issues

Hi everyone,

Over the past couple of weeks I've been learning Maya. (I'm using the 2012 version). I am now experimenting with lighting and rendering. Over the past couple of days I have encountered a strange (and annoying!) issue.

When I render my scene on "preview," I get the following.

When I render my scene on "production," I get the following.

Why is there such a huge difference between the two? I haven't altered anything other than going from "preview" to "production" in the quality presets settings. I have two point lights and a sun/sky system in my scene.

I have even tried importing all of my materials and objects into a brand new scene with the hopes of it somehow resolving this issue, but to no avail.

Do you have any suggestions for me? (Please bare with me as I'm still a 'beginner' user in Maya).

Thank you!
