I guess it won't hurt explaining floating shield idea. It was actually my (probably lame) attempt to balance the composition, that was leaning to the left because of the rised sword (or so was my impression). At the same time I wanted him to have a shield, but I didn't wanted to put it in his other hand, because it would cover too much of him. Being chibi or whatever, he is supposed to be cute and funny, so it came rather naturally - baloon shield! :poly136:
Was experimenting with turning photos into hand-painted textures. or should I say stylised? Anyway, turns out this is very time consuming, so I abandoned that idea. These are unfinished and probably will stay that way.
suburbbum thanks. But I'm afraid there is no definitive workflow I can share. Like I've said it was an experiment, and I didn't care about saving stages.
I took some photos from cgtextures, cropped, mixed and then, basically, all I did was a lot of color-picking and then painting over with simple brush. The idea is to remove things that makes photo look like a photo. Noise, high frequency details, all that stuff is removed. Edges are beveled to make it look more stylised.
To finish these, I would need to add some finer details, but it was taking too long, because there is just to much things that needed to be removed and thats just time wasted. So I abandoned it. Its easier to paint this stuff from scratch.
One thing I do like though, is the color. Somehow it stands out from the usual hand-painted stuff I do everyday for work. Hopefully, one day, I'll get it
I like that last piece, the legs & feet on the metal part make me laugh.
You said its mostly 2D on top of 3Dblockout? I might try that, maybe it'll help me get better angles and view ideas before starting 2D work
I'm with Andy -I really like what you've shown and wish you could post more!
thanks Charli, yeah, its started with this sketch:
then I made 3d blockout and painted on top of it. nothing new really. I think there is much better examples can be found on the net. it mostly helps with perspective. I really don't have patience to do all that stuff with vanishing points, so its kinda 'cheating'
I don't have that much patience (or experience, really)either with drawing perspective.I'm up for "cheating while learning" haha
Thanks for posting the sketches!
How many light sources are you working with in your floor textures. They intrigue me a lot cause of thier quality. Are you looking for work and do you have a portfolio online? I have an upcoming project for an MMO though the art style hasn't been decided yet. Let me look through your sketchbook a little more and edit this post.
Devart: there is no light sources at all. These are promotional images for 3DOcean, created in photoshop. Though there is nothing that cannot be achieved in modern game engines.
Are you much of a game designer? You got the artwork to make a certain style of graphics that I like and I feel I have a few thoughts on games that might be fun if you'd like to private message back and forth a little.
Alright, excuse the offtopic discussion. I was going to comment on your artwork and so I will >
Your perspective on buildings follows a very good workflow for the stylized appearance. Do you have environments modeled to go with the buildings so they populate a region?
Yay! Found another person who does hand painted stuff. Your work is phenomenal and I wish I could give some pointers but in my opinion you really don't need any. These look like they could easily be used in World of Warcraft or Torchlight.
I'll be following your work and studying it. Hopefully my textures will begin to look beautiful like these. Please keep posting and inspiring.
These hand painted textures look really great. I have a really strong interest in your workflow for making these. Does it take a very long time? Have you tried any metallic textures yet?
Fenyce, TerryMosier: thanks! obriien: thank you about my workflow - there is no definitive workflow, like 1. 2. 3. ... Sometimes I start from scratch and sometimes I can use a photo with the surface I like or want to paint. Overall its just a lot of hand painting. It takes few hours at least to paint one of these.

Yay, lets follow each other!! xD Seriously, I'm keeping an eye on your threads, awesome stuff you making. :poly131:
thanks! I guess levitating shield doesn't make much sense, does it?
p.s. As for the levitating shield itself, here's an idea:

and one more, this is mostly 2d, but on top of 3d blockout

trying my luck @ envato marketplaces. >my profile<
did three handpainted textures so far, planning for more.
YBourykina: Kate thanks! You're quite an inspiration yourself! I'm a huge fan))
anyway, made another one. kinda bored with just textures, gonna switch to full cycle - concepts - modeling - texturing.
