Can this be done? I presumed I could just import the base, subdivide to the correct level and then import as layer but it just explodes.
Aside from going down the displacement map route, is there a way to import models into Mudbox from ZBrush and vice versa to continue working?

but i dont see this as a good idea to jump back and forth...
in the end for baking and texturing but not during the sculpting...
you will allways loose your layer...
Can Zbrush do this? Can't see a way to erase detail on a single layer and not affect other detail.
